Email Scanning Service FAQ

Welcome to the Email Scanning FAQ. We've compiled this list of frequently asked questions to help you understand our Mail Scanning Service.

1. Will spam be deleted before I retrieve my email?

No, no emails are deleted from your mailbox unless you configure it to do so. Emails marked as spam are modified and tagged, making it easy for you to filter them into a separate folder if you choose to. You have the option to configure MailScanner to automatically delete email marked as spam if you prefer.

2. Should I report incorrectly tagged spam?

You don't need to report incorrectly tagged spam unless it's from a trusted sender. You can set up inbox rules in your email client to ensure these emails stay in your inbox or add them to your whitelist in the cPanel MailScanner configuration.

3. Will all spam be detected?

No, not all spam will be detected. Our system assigns a score to each email based on the likelihood that it's spam. Thresholds are used to determine whether an email should be tagged as spam, balancing the need to avoid false positives and false negatives.

4. Is all email tagged as spam actually spam?

No, not necessarily. Our system isn't foolproof, and there may be cases where legitimate emails are mistakenly tagged as spam and vice versa. This is why all emails are delivered by default, allowing you to filter and check through them in your email client.

5. Can I configure email scanning for just viruses or spam?

Yes, you can configure the service to scan for viruses, spam, or both, depending on your preferences.

6. Will viruses be deleted before I retrieve my email?

Yes, if you enable Virus Scanning in the MailScanner Front-end. Emails and file attachments are scanned for viruses, and if found, the virus is removed from the email. Removed viruses and dangerous file attachments may be stored in a quarantine area on the server for 30 days.

7. Will all viruses be detected?

No system can guarantee 100% detection, but our service should detect nearly all infected files and dangerous file attachments to prevent the spread of viruses.

8. Do I still need a virus scanner on my computer?

Yes, you should always have an anti-virus solution on your computer to protect against various infection methods.

9. How do I identify emails with viruses or spam?

Emails with viruses or spam are identified by prefixes in the subject line, such as {Disarmed}, {Virus?}, {Filename?}, {Spam?}, or {Definitely Spam?}. Additional headers provide more information about virus and spam checks.

10. Can the system automatically delete all email marked as spam?

We recommend against this, as legitimate emails may be deleted. We suggest filtering spam into a separate folder in your email client to review at your convenience. You can also configure MailScanner to delete spam emails if you're certain they are unwanted.

11. How do I configure my email software to filter spam?

Create a separate folder in your email client for spam. Then, set up inbox rules to move emails containing {Spam?} or {Definitely Spam?} into that folder. We provide instructions for setting this up with Outlook Express and Outlook.

12. What can I do to prevent receiving spam?
